Why Newborn Photography Isn’t Just A Photo Session
When families first enquire about newborn photography, one of the most common questions is about price. On the surface, it can seem like you’re paying for a few hours in a studio and a set of beautiful images.
But the reality is that a professional newborn session is much more than the shoot itself.
On average, a single newborn session takes around 50 hours of work from the first enquiry to the moment your finished gallery is delivered. When you break it down, the cost of a session reflects weeks of preparation, care, and craftsmanship dedicated to documenting your baby’s earliest days.
Here’s a look behind the scenes.
1. Enquiry & Consultation (1–2 hours)
Every newborn journey begins with conversations. This includes responding to enquiries, explaining packages, helping parents prepare for the session, and answering questions about timing, feeding, outfits, and safety.
2. Session Preparation (3–5 hours)
Before a baby even arrives in the studio, there is significant preparation involved. Props, wraps, blankets, and outfits are selected and coordinated. The studio is cleaned and sanitised, setups are designed, and lighting is prepared to create a calm and safe environment for your newborn.
3. The Newborn Session (3–4 hours)
Newborn photography sessions are intentionally slow and baby-led. Feeding breaks, soothing, and safe posing all take time. These sessions are designed to be calm, gentle, and comfortable for both baby and parents.
4. Image Selection & Culling (1–2hours)
After the session, hundreds of images are reviewed. The strongest photographs are carefully selected to ensure your gallery tells a cohesive story and includes only the most beautiful moments.
5. Hand Editing & Retouching (20–35 hours)
Newborn images require delicate, detailed editing. This includes skin retouching, colour correction, blending composite images for safety, and refining each photograph so it reflects the soft, timeless style parents love.
6. Gallery Preparation & Delivery (2–3 hours)
Once editing is complete, galleries are prepared, exported, uploaded, and organised so parents can easily view and select their images.
7. Product Design & Ordering (2–3 hours)
Albums, wall art, and printed products are carefully designed to ensure they become lasting heirlooms. Orders are placed, checked, and packaged for delivery.
8. Business Costs & Continuing Education
Behind every session is ongoing investment in professional equipment, props, insurance, software, studio rent, safety training, and education to ensure babies are photographed safely and beautifully.
When You Break It Down…
If a newborn photographer spends around 50 hours creating your session experience and gallery, the session fee isn’t simply paying for a few hours with a camera. It supports the time, expertise, safety knowledge, artistic skill, and care that goes into preserving one of the most fleeting seasons of your life.
Your baby will only be this tiny once.
Newborn photography is an investment not just in images, but in memories that your family will hold onto for decades.
And when you look at the time, care, and craftsmanship behind every gallery, it becomes clear that what you’re truly investing in is something far more meaningful than a single session.

The safety of your little one is my highest priority.
Some photos aren’t what they seem and require multiple shots to be taken that are then merged in Photoshop afterwards to achieve the desired result.
Countless hours are spent each year on professional development,
ensuring your baby is being handled, posed and styled safely and creatively to ensure all of my families are safe at all times.
I’m registered & fully vaccinated which are both kept up to date each year.
I have a background in dental nursing which provides me with the necessary knowledge in hygiene.
The studio has a full change-over deep clean and has safe hours in place between shoots to ensure all the families who visit the studio are in a safe and clean environment.
